What the 3453 alarm means
The DSI (Drive Safety Interface) board detects a deviation between the safety (multi-turn safe) encoder and the standard encoder on one axis — the most reported intermittent fault on CS9 controllers, often appearing mid-motion as 'DSI9 board not referenced'. This is one of the faults our repair team handles on Staubli CS8 / CS9 (VAL3) systems — the cause is usually identifiable within the first on-site inspection.
Most common causes
- External 24 V supply dip while the robot runs (controllers converted to external 24 V are the classic case)
- Loose J213 24 V distribution connector
- Encoder wiring or grounding fault on the affected axis
- Failing encoder
Step-by-step field fix
- Check whether the CS9 is powered by an external 24 V — restoring the original internal 24 V is the most common permanent fix
- Measure 24 V stability at the controller while the robot is running (must stay above about 21.6 V)
- Inspect the J213 connector and surrounding wiring
- Perform the safe reference (re-reference) procedure on the pendant
- If the deviation returns on the same axis, test that axis encoder and harness
